What is solar thermal?
Solar thermal, also known as solar heating, is a technology that harnesses the energy from the sun to generate heat. Unlike solar PV panels that convert sunlight into electricity, solar thermal systems capture the sun’s heat directly and use it to warm up water for various applications, from showers to heating your radiators.
Solar thermal panels have the potential to reduce your hot water energy costs by approximately 60% and your space heating demands by around 35%. This can help shave a significant amount off your heating bills over time.
There are two types of solar thermal system on the market, flat panel systems and evacuated tube systems. We recommend flat panel systems for most domestic properties, as they are less prone to overheating.

How do solar thermal panels work?
Absorption of Sunlight: Solar thermal panels (or collectors) are designed with a dark-coloured, heat-absorbing surface made of materials that are good at capturing sunlight. This surface is often covered with a glass or plastic cover to create a greenhouse effect, trapping the captured heat inside.
Heat Transfer Fluid: A heat transfer fluid (usually water mixed with antifreeze or another heat-transfer medium, like glycol) flows through tubes or channels within the solar panels. When sunlight hits the absorbing surface, it heats up the fluid within these tubes.
Heat Transfer: As the heat transfer fluid absorbs the sun’s energy, it becomes hotter. This heated fluid is then pumped away from the solar panels and into a heat exchanger or storage tank.
Heat Exchange: In a heat exchanger or storage tank, the heat from the fluid is transferred to the water that you use for various purposes, such as domestic hot water or space heating.
Circulation: After the heat exchange, the now cooler heat transfer fluid returns to the solar panels to be heated again, completing the cycle.
