At Solar Service Solutions, we understand that making the jump to solar energy can be daunting. That is why we have compiled answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we receive regarding solar pv panels, solar thermal and electric vehicle chargers.
We hope that you find these videos useful, but if you should have any further questions regarding solar thermal maintenance, solar pv products or EV charging stations, don’t hesitate to contact our team on 0330 124 2941 – we are happy to help!
What can go wrong with a solar thermal system?
If the system isn’t serviced regularly, the fluid can thicken over time, causing blockages in the system as well as your pump to fail.
Is it worth upgrading my solar PV system?
If your system has been installed for a number of years, and is a basic system, you are likely to only be using around 35% of the energy that the system produces. Adding a battery to the system has the potential to increase that to usage to up to 65-70%. An energy diverter will take some of the remaining excess power and divert it to your hot water cylinder via the immersion heater, effectively giving you almost free hot water right through from spring to autumn.
What is PV optimisation?
On a conventional system, we have a solar array (panels) connected to an inverter, that converts the energy from the sun into the electricity that you use. If there is shading on any of the panels the whole array will be affected. An optimiser sits behind each panel and treats it as an individual inverter, increasing the output of the system and ultimately saving you more money.
Does solar PV require regular maintenance?
The statement “because it has no moving parts, it doesn’t need maintenance”, is not true. There are several steps that need to be taken regularly to maintain a solar PV system.
The panels should be cleaned every year, and the safety of the electrical components should be checked every 5 – 10 years.
The system’s performance should also be checked to ensure you are still receiving the full benefit from your solar system.
What can go wrong with a solar PV system?
As there aren’t any moving parts, not a lot can go wrong. However, one big issue is shade. Any trees growing near your system that produce shade over the panels will reduce their output. This can be rectified by simply trimming the tree back, or fitting optimisers that will help to reduce the impact.
Do PV solar panels work with EV chargers?
The good news is yes. However, we need to make sure that it is the right charger so that you can use the free electricity you are generating to charge your car.
