What is solar thermal?
Solar thermal, also known as solar heating, is a technology that harnesses the energy from the sun to generate heat. Unlike solar PV panels that convert sunlight into electricity, solar thermal systems capture the sun’s heat directly and use it to warm up water for various applications, from showers to heating your radiators.
Solar thermal panels have the potential to reduce your hot water energy costs by approximately 60% and your space heating demands by around 35%. This can help shave a significant amount off your heating bills over time.
There are two types of solar thermal system on the market, flat panel systems and evacuated tube systems. We recommend flat panel systems for most domestic properties, as they are less prone to overheating.
Is a solar thermal system right for me?
A solar thermal system could be the perfect addition to your property if:
- Cutting down on your heating bills is a priority.
- You have a compatible boiler system (conventional boilers are usually compatible with solar thermal systems).
- You have a hot water cylinder (if you have a combi boiler, a water cylinder will be required).
- You want to reduce your reliance on less eco-friendly heating methods.
- You have a South-facing roof (or between East and West).
If you are unsure if a solar thermal system is right for you, don’t hesitate to contact our team. We will be more than happy to walk you through the benefits and answer any questions you may have.
How do solar thermal panels work?
Absorption of Sunlight: Solar thermal panels (or collectors) are designed with a dark-coloured, heat-absorbing surface made of materials that are good at capturing sunlight. This surface is often covered with a glass or plastic cover to create a greenhouse effect, trapping the captured heat inside.
Heat Transfer Fluid: A heat transfer fluid (usually water mixed with antifreeze or another heat-transfer medium, like glycol) flows through tubes or channels within the solar panels. When sunlight hits the absorbing surface, it heats up the fluid within these tubes.
Heat Transfer: As the heat transfer fluid absorbs the sun’s energy, it becomes hotter. This heated fluid is then pumped away from the solar panels and into a heat exchanger or storage tank.
Heat Exchange: In a heat exchanger or storage tank, the heat from the fluid is transferred to the water that you use for various purposes, such as domestic hot water or space heating.
Circulation: After the heat exchange, the now cooler heat transfer fluid returns to the solar panels to be heated again, completing the cycle.
Upgrade your old solar thermal system
If you have an old solar thermal system, it may be time for an upgrade!
Just like any technology, solar thermal systems have evolved over the years. If your existing system is costing you more in maintenance and repairs than it’s saving you, it’s probably time to modernise.
Upgrading to a new solar thermal system can lead to increased efficiency, better performance, and a more seamless integration with your home’s energy needs.
We install state-of-the-art solar thermal systems that are specifically tailored to your home and heating needs. Contact us today on 0330 124 2941 to speak to a member of our expert team and arrange a quote.
Solar Thermal FAQs
Solar thermal and solar PV serve different purposes. Solar thermal excels at heating water and space heating, whilst solar panels excel at generating electricity. It’s all about matching your needs and priorities.
In general, you can expect your solar thermal system to provide around 90% of your hot water requirements during summer.
Yes, solar thermal panels work all-year-round, though just like solar panels, their effectiveness is reduced in winter due to shorter days and less exposure to sunlight.
Whilst solar thermal panels can be expected to account for around 90% of your hot water requirements during summer, this drops to around 25% during winter.
Every technology has its drawbacks. Solar thermal systems require space for installation, and the initial cost can be significant. However, the long-term energy savings and positive environmental impact often outweighs these considerations.
Whilst you technically do not require a boiler for a solar thermal system to work, it’s still a good idea to have one, as during winter you may find yourself reliant on another form of heating as sunlight hours decrease.
If you have a combi boiler, then a hot water cylinder will need to be installed if not already.
As a general guide, you’ll require 1 – 2 flat plate collectors for a 2-bedroom house, and 2 – 3 panels for a 3-bedroom house. Our team will be able to give you a more accurate recommendation upon a site visit.
Yes, it is possible to use solar PV panels to heat your water, but you will require an immersion diverter to do so. This will allow you to redirect your unused solar energy into heating your hot water tank.
Embrace the warmth of sustainable living with a new solar thermal system! By capturing the sun’s heat, you’re not just upgrading your home – you’re contributing to a greener, more eco-friendly future.
