Make the Most of Your Solar Panels With Solar Batteries!

Installing solar panels on your home’s roof is an enormous step towards a greener home and achieving energy independence, but there’s a slight catch. Because they rely on the sun to generate energy, panels are only active when the sun is out, and you can’t use them to power your home at night.

That’s where solar battery storage comes in!

With an energy storage system, you can optimise the use of your solar PV panels by storing surplus energy generated during the day for later use. Whether it’s to power your home at night or keep essential appliances running during a blackout, our solar storage solutions ensure you get the most out of your renewable energy investment.

Say goodbye to limitations and embrace uninterrupted clean energy! Contact our expert team today on 0333 696 6214 to get started.

      Solar Battery FAQs

What solar batteries do you install?

When it comes to solar batteries, our manufacturer of choice is Growatt because they offer excellent quality and affordability. However, we have close ties to other manufacturers in the industry as well, including GivEnergy, Solax and Sunsynk, so if you have a preference in manufacturer, do let us know and we’ll do our best to accommodate you. Contact us today to discuss your requirements.

How long do solar batteries last?

The lifespan of solar batteries can vary depending on several factors, including the type of battery, the brand, and how well they are maintained.

Lead-acid batteries, which are commonly used in solar power systems, can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years with proper maintenance. However, their lifespan can be affected by factors such as depth of discharge (the amount of capacity used in each cycle), temperature, and charging and discharging rates.

Lithium-ion batteries, which are becoming increasingly popular due to their higher energy density and longer cycle life, can last even longer. High-quality lithium-ion batteries used in solar applications can have a lifespan of 10 to 20 years or more.

Is a 10 kW solar battery enough to run a house?

Yes – a 10 kW solar battery is considered sufficient to power an average home. According to the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), a standard household in the UK will use approximately 3,731 kWh energy per year. That breaks down to roughly 10 kWh per day, which a 10 kW solar battery should be able to manage. Our team will be able to give you a better indication on the size of solar battery system you’ll require for your property. Contact us today to find out more.

How much battery storage do you need for solar panels?

One way to estimate the amount of battery storage you need is to look at your average daily energy consumption and the size of your solar panel system. A general rule of thumb is to have enough battery storage to last for at least one to two days of electricity usage.

For example, if your average daily energy consumption is 20 kWh and your solar panel system generates 5 kWh per day, you may want to consider a battery storage system with at least 30-40 kWh of storage capacity to provide backup power during a power outage.

Using our forecasting system, we can tell you exactly how many solar batteries you’ll need – and of what size. Contact us today to find out more.

What happens to solar power when batteries are full?

If your solar batteries are full, they will stop absorbing power until space is made available. If you join the Smart Export Guarantee Scheme, you can sell the excess energy that you don’t use back to the National Grid for a profit!

How many batteries do I need to go off-grid?

As a general rule of thumb, you’ll need enough battery storage to provide power for at least two to three days without any solar input. This will ensure that you have enough energy stored to power your home during periods of low sunlight or during an extended outage.

Once you have an estimate of your daily energy consumption (you can find this on your energy statement) and the amount of energy your solar panel system can generate, you can calculate the amount of battery storage you need by multiplying your daily energy consumption by the number of days of backup power you want (usually two to three days), and then dividing by the battery’s usable capacity.

However, it’s not all about your solar storage capacity. You also need enough solar panels to generate the amount of power you need. Our team can help you discover exactly what you’ll need – contact us today.

Is getting solar battery storage worth it?

Yes. If you’ve got solar panels, you’ll get a lot more value from them by having a solar battery system. This is because you’ll be able to:

      • Significantly cut down on the amount of energy you buy from the National Grid
      • Substantially reduce your energy bills
      • Limit your carbon footprint
      • Have access to your stored solar energy even at night and when there’s no sun
      • Sell unused energy back to the National Grid thanks to Smart Export Guarantee

You can find out more about the benefits of solar batteries in our dedicated blog.

Can solar batteries be stored outside?

Yes, solar batteries can be stored outside. However, you’ll need to choose a battery that is designed to withstand outdoor environments.

There are outdoor-rated models available that can withstand a range of weather conditions, including rain, snow, and extreme temperatures. When choosing an outdoor-rated solar battery, consult a professional and look for a model that has a high IP rating.

In the UK, temperatures can range from below freezing to above 30°C, so you’ll want to choose a battery that can operate within this range. Our team will be able to advise you further, so don’t hesitate to reach out.

Do solar batteries work in a blackout?

Yes, many solar battery storage systems are designed to provide backup power during a power outage. These systems can detect when the grid goes down and switch to battery power automatically, allowing you to continue using electricity without interruption.

However, not all solar batteries are designed for backup power during a blackout. Therefore, it’s important to check with the manufacturer or installer.

Do solar batteries qualify for tax credit?

Between 1st April 2022 and 31st March 2027, you do not have to pay VAT on solar panels. There are also government grants available as part of the ECO4 scheme, to help households cover the costs of solar panels.
